So after a weekend of celebrating we got another treat today bu having Lucas be featured on Circle 21's Facebook page. It was especially cute to see all the "likes" and wonderful comment left. How cool! Thanks for making our day Circle 21! It's hard to see but the quote says "Every child is gifted. They just unwrap their packages at different times."
A personal glimpse into our world as we raise an amazing little man and allow him to capture the hearts and expand the mindset of many. Although Down Syndrome was unexpected, we wouldn't change a thing because our baby is perfect just the way he is.

Lucas turns 1 - The Birthday Party
Here are a few photos taken of the birthday party yesterday that we had to celebrate Lucas turning 1. It was a great day and we were so happy that so many family and friends came to be with us. We are especially grateful to all our family that traveled from out of state to be with us, it was surely a special treat. We know some could not be with us but you were there in spirit! Also, a very special thank you to our cousin Marissa Kissane for the amazing photos!

A Birthday Letter To My Son Reflecting On Our Love Story As You Turn 1
The day was cold and windy when I found out you were growing
within. But I remember having a warm
feeling from head to toe because you filled me with happiness, feelings beyond
belief and immense tears of joy. Imagine that? And we had only known each other
for a matter of minutes at that time. Even then I knew I loved you
unconditionally. You have no idea how excited both daddy and I were about what
a baby meant for us and couldn’t wait to share our news. As I look back now by the way everyone
embraced the news and anticipated your arrival it should have been a no brainer
that you would be a BIG deal. You have surely proven that and you are only just
turning 1!
As we planned for you and waited for you, there were so many
things that mommy and daddy went through which you are much too young to
understand right now. Some things made
us laugh, some things made us nervous and other things made us cry. But what
was most important of all was that we loved you and just couldn’t wait to meet
you. It was really the hardest thing I
have ever had to wait for and mommy was getting ever so impatient. All I could
do was have faith and pray for more patience that you would arrive
safely. On the day you finally did make
your entrance it was exactly one year from today. I remember it like no other and I just couldn’t
stop crying when I heard your first cry because you were here, you were
beautiful and you were perfect.
So as I think about all we have been through since September
8, 2011 there is so much that comes to mind. It is filled with love, anxiousness,
laughter, worry, some frustration, lots of tears, great joy, pride and
empowerment. But more than anything it
is filled with happiness because we’ve shared all your baby “first” moments this
year, our endless hours of cuddling and the indescribable joy of adding you to our
family that makes it complete and whole.
This is what is important and this is our how lives were meant
to be lived. You coming into this world
to show us and others how to love beyond measure and how to live life to the
fullest without taking one single day for granted. Yes baby, you have showed us that and are
still doing it! You were the baby I was
meant to have and I am the mother you were meant to have because God makes no
mistakes. He knew what he was doing and
he knew that we would need each other along this journey full of the
unpredictable. From the extended NICU
stay, the days of NG feeding tubes, the multiple ER visits, constant oxygen
level checks, to unplanned ambulance transports from one hospital to another,
to the looming but critically needed open heart surgery to those hours upon
hours of different therapies we have done it together. Me, you, daddy and all
our countless family and friends both near and far. I need you to know that I love you. You strengthen me. You make me proud and I cannot even imagine
how I thought I was fulfilled before you came into it.
It is surely amazing how in just one year you have turned
our lives around all for the better and made me the proudest mama around and
your biggest cheerleader. Mommy will be
there every step of the way as you grow into a mature little boy and I will rally
behind you to help you reach your full potential. That is a promise. There will be no stopping you and you will
amaze us all with each milestone you conquer.
So on this day when you officially turn “1” know that you
have taught and showed mommy and daddy so many things and touched many lives
with your beauty, intelligence and infectious smile. You have had a remarkable
year full of triumph and promise but the best is yet to come. Just you wait and
see, just you wait and see. You were
meant to be celebrated today and every day!
Happy 1st birthday my angel!
With love,
Your Mommy

A little pre-birthday bash with my friends!
Today was a very awesome day when we went to daycare because we got to celebrate Lucas turning 1 with all this friends and his teachers. We got to sing the Happy Birthday song, put a silly hat on Lucas and load up on yummy brownies. It was great!

You want me to do what?
"Oh no!" Mom please don't make me." was all I thought I heard Lucas say at today's PT session even though he isn't even talking yet. Every time he sees Sammy (his PT) walk in the infant room he instantly knows that some hard work is coming his way and today was no different. Since our goal right now is to continue strengthening Lucas' ability to hold weight on his arms as well as knees, increase transitioning that allows wider range of motion while sitting and also strengthen his core I even knew we were only minutes away from the lower lip sticking out while Lucas did his ever so famous pouty-face! Although Lucas did some tough work today I was so happy to see some visible progress that had me smiling because I could tell that Lucas is getting stronger and maybe not too far off from crawling or wanting to try standing while in a sitting position with adequate support. Mama was so very proud of the little man for how hard he worked today, even if we took mini-breaks when Lucas turned on the waterworks, when doing exercises he didn't like.
So in an effort to combat this we decided to switch things up a little to keep Lucas interested and motivated; and also assist with the tears he was releasing in today's session. So instead of the usual treadmill training we went to "The Cage" which consists of a harness, a bunch of bungee cords and attaching all that to a metal cage exterior while Lucas is seated in the center. It was pretty cool and he loved it. This is yet another tool to help with our strengthening exercises and offers great resistance while keeping Lucas nice and secure. He was so intrigued with the bungees that I am certain he had no clue how hard he worked for half of the session! This is a winner!

3 day weekends are the best!
Well since Labor Day was coming up we wanted to relax a bit and have lots of fun family time. That meant we planned on hanging out with friends and family, as well as doing things that were long overdue, like getting Lucas a big boy car seat! (I think it was more sad for mama! RIP infant car seat!) As if all that wasn't enough we got to also introduce Lucas to college football which in this family is just a way of life! Especially rooting for the Michigan Wolverines no matter if they win or lose! Being able to enjoy all of these fun times and all the little things that life has to offer makes my life so fulfilling and me so ever thankful.
Here are some photos Lucas were was suited up in his maize and blue and yelling his loudest GO BLUE! which actually sounded a little more like.."ah ah ahhhhhhh" but by the end of season I am sure it will get a little better! Ha!
And for the rest of the weekend we hung out in a neighboring town to check out the sights and also made sure there was plenty of time for Lucas to play with his new obsession! (His new toy!)
